Corten steel rusting process
This garden post is manufactured in corten steel – a steel grade that naturally develops a warm, protective oxide layer when exposed to outdoor atmospheric conditions.
Upon delivery, the garden post is still free of corrosion. The steel has been factory grit-blasted to remove the mill scale and to ensure that the garden post will rust evenly.
After installation and exposure to weather and wind, the steel will gradually change colour and evolve towards its final, distinctive appearance.
Each garden post ages at its own pace, making every unit unique.
Patina development process
![]() | ![]() | ![]() | ![]() |
Week 1–4
Initial colour changes may appear, especially after rainfall or morning dew.Month 1–3
The oxide layer deepens and becomes more uniform. After approximately 6 months
The steel reaches its stable final colour and forms a natural protective patina.
The speed of this process is influenced by rainfall, humidity, and the installation environment.
Recommendations for patina formation
Install the garden post in an open-air environment
Ensure exposure to rain and sunlight
Temporary colour variations or spotting may occur during the initial phase
Do not use rust accelerators or chemical treatments
Acids, salt solutions, or commercial rust accelerators may:
cause an uneven oxide layer
reduce the protective performance of the patina
lead to staining or discolouration of surrounding materials
Rust run-off
During the first months, rainwater may carry rust residues from the surface.
Avoid installation:
on light-coloured natural stone
on porous paving tiles
near untreated wood surfaces
Read the manual completely before installing and activating the system.
