Connected use of the connected motor control, Zigbee®

Configuration

You can use a connected motor control, Zigbee® with a wireless bridge (550-00640) or smart hub (552-00001) to enable more advanced functions. The configuration is performed with the Niko Home Control programming software or Niko Home app.

The motor control includes an internal switch-over delay of 0.5 seconds when changing the run direction from ‘UP’ to ‘DOWN’ or vice versa. This switch-over delay allows the motor capacitor to discharge its energy and protects the motor against current peaks and sudden torque changes.

Preconditions

  • You installed the wireless bridge (550-00640) or wireless smart hub for Niko Home Control

  • You have a Wi-Fi network with internet connection and the wireless smart hub (552-00001) or wireless bridge (550-00640) is connected to your home network 

  • You registered the Niko Home Control installation. You will need the mac address and the serial number mentioned on the connected controller or the smart hub. See https://guide.niko.eu/en/umnhc2/lv/register-your-installation.

  • You did one of the following:

    • You installed the Niko Home app on your mobile device and are logged in

    • You installed the Niko Home Control programming software on your computer (Windows or Mac)

You can set up a connection with your Niko Home Control installation by:

    • Plugging a UTP cable from your computer into a free port on the router linked to the connected controller or smart hub

    • Plugging a UTP cable from your computer directly into the WAN port of the connected controller or smart hub (if no router is available)

    •  You can also link your computer via the Wi-Fi interface

Make sure that the computer is on the same IP network as the connected controller or smart hub

Open the Niko Home Control programming software.

  • You may be asked to install a software upgrade for your Niko Home Control installation. Run this upgrade and wait until completion

  • The upgrade may take 5 to 20 minutes

  • Software upgrades are not detected when opening the Niko Home Control programming software if there is no connection to the Niko Home Control installation (offline mode)

Choose one of the following options:

    • Open an existing Niko Home Control project from your PC (see Opening a project)

    • Open an existing configuration file from the connected controller or smart hub

    • Create a new project with the desired floor maps (see Create a project)

Open the Create overview window.

    1. In the right-hand button bar, go to Add controls and devices.

    2. Choose one of the following:

      • Select the Room at the top of the pane, or

      • Click inside a Room in the Create overview window to indicate where you want to add the Zigbee® device.

The room perimeter line will be highlighted.

    1. In the Add controls and devices pane, go to Connected controls

    2. Select the Zigbee® device type that you want to add (Connected switches, Zigbee®, Connected dimmers, Zigbee®, or Connected motor controls, Zigbee®)

    3. Select the desired Zigbee® device from the list (with or without feedback LED).

  • The Zigbee® device will appear as three icons in the left upper corner of the selected room: A control icon, a device icon (lamp) and a basic action icon

  • You can edit each icon name: click on the icon and change the Name field

  • It is possible to drag the Zigbee® device to another room

  • The field Operating mode can be set to (see also Adjusting the operating mode of a push button):

    • Short press: to activate the basic action or routine by briefly pressing the push button (default)

    • Press and hold: to activate the basic action or routine by holding down the push button. Set the Duration (minimum 1 second - maximum 59 seconds)

    • Push button mode: to activate the basic action or routine for as long as the push button is pressed

  • The field Shift function can be set to Disabled (default) or Enabled. See also Create menu - Condition

Set the parameters of the Zigbee® device for a basic actionroutinecondition, or time schedule.

  • You can change the graphic of the basic action icon. Click on the icon Visualised graphic and select a new one. This icon will also become visible in the Niko Home app

  • To change the feedback LED visualisation for a Zigbee® device with feedback LED, go to the Basic action menu and scroll to the field Feedback LED. Select the preferred state from a drop-down menu:

    • Normal: feedback LED is ON when the device is active (default)

    • Inverted: feedback LED is OFF when the device is active

    • Always ON: feedback LED is always ON

    • Always OFF: feedback LED is always OFF

  • The Basic action can:

    • be linked to a specific period after which the basic action is stopped. Tick the selection box and set the desired timer value.

    • only be shown on the Niko Home app or touchscreen. Tick the selection box. Note that the linked controls will be removed!

Pair a Zigbee® device with your Niko Home Control installation and link it to an address.

    1. Open the Address overview window and go to Controls and devices. The addressing status highlights how many devices are already addressed.

    2. Click on the plus sign of a controls icon to add them to the list in the pane.

    3. Follow the explanations in the How to set up pane to pair the Zigbee® device (see also the images below this table).

  • When addressing the Zigbee® devices, ensure that the next Zigbee® device to be addressed is always closest to one of the previously addressed and powered devices. Possible gaps in your Zigbee® network can be solved by adding extra connected socket outlets or 230 V powered Zigbee® devices where needed. See Zigbee® network principle

  • The addressing cannot be done offline. The programming software should be connected to your Niko Home Control installation

  • Verify whether the Zigbee® device is a connected Zigbee® device (552-xxxxx)

  • The Zigbee® device should not be linked to another Zigbee® network. If this is the case, reset your device

  • Verify whether the Zigbee® device is within the range of the wireless smart hub or wireless bridge

  • Only pair one Zigbee® device at a time

  • Do not press the switch button or any other buttons during the onboarding procedure

Repeat steps 4-8 for every Zigbee® device that you want to add to the Niko Home Control project. Each device that has been successfully added and addressed will display a yellow arrow next to its device icon.

When all Zigbee® devices have been addressed, upload them to your Niko Home Control Installation.

Set the Niko Zigbee® device in pairing mode by pressing the switch button 3 times within 6 seconds. The blue LED will blink for max. 5 minutes

Pairing mode = LEDs flashing

The motor control has been successfully added to the Zigbee® network when the blue LED turns ON for 4 seconds and subsequently turns OFF


Onboarding via the Niko Home App

  • Reset the Niko Zigbee® device if it is already connected to another network before initiating a new onboarding sequence, see Reset mode

  • Installation code or QR code commissioning can be done if supported by the third-party Zigbee® network. Consult the third-party user manual. The installation code, MAC address and QR-code are printed on the Zigbee® control

Open the Niko Home App.

  • When you open the Settings or Devices menu, you may be asked to perform a system upgrade. Run this upgrade and wait until completion

  • The upgrade may take 5 to 20 minutes

Go to the hamburger menu (≡) > Settings > Devices > Switches

    1. Select the room where you want to install the Zigbee® device

Or

    1. Go to the Control Tab of the Room of your choice

    2. Click the (+) icon (Add device)

    3. Select the Zigbee® device type that you want to add in the Devices menu (Switches, Lights or Shutters and blinds)

    1. Follow the onboarding steps as presented in the Niko Home app.

    2. Add the Niko Zigbee® device by pressing the switch button 3 times within 6 seconds. The blue LED will blink for max. 5 minutes. (See also the images below this table.)

  • When addressing the Zigbee® devices, ensure that the next Zigbee® device to be addressed is always closest to one of the previously addressed and powered devices.   • Verify whether the Zigbee® device is a connected Zigbee® device (552-xxxxx)

  • The Zigbee® device should not already be linked to another Zigbee® network. If this is the case, reset your device

  • Verify whether the Zigbee® device is within the range of the wireless smart hub or wireless bridge

  • Only add one Zigbee® device at a time

  • Do not press the switch button or any other buttons during the onboarding procedure

The Zigbee® device has been successfully added to the Zigbee® network when the blue LED turns ON for 4 seconds and turns OFF again.

The blue LED will not turn ON for 4 seconds if the pairing fails. In this case, the blue LED will be deactivated after 5 minutes and the white LED will display the state of the output (ON = built-in contact closed, OFF = built-in contact open)

When the Zigbee® device is detected, a message will appear in the Niko Home app.

    1. Indicate whether the switch is fitted with a feedback LED or not

    2. Press Next.

Select the type of connected blinds that you are controlling:

  • connected motor control for shutters

  • connected motor control for sun blinds

Press Done. You can use the Zigbee® device after a successful upload.

  • Depending on the installation size the configuration upload may take up to 2 minutes

Configuring a connected motor control in a third-party installation

Consult the manufacturer's manual for more information on whether third-party Zigbee® devices can be used in their home automation installation. The Niko connected Zigbee® devices behave in third-party networks like home automation device types that support the mandatory Zigbee® clusters and commands.

Third-party Zigbee® installations that require private clusters and/or non-mandatory clusters from their network devices might not be compatible with the connected Niko Zigbee® device. See the disclaimer on www.niko.eu/zigbee.

The Niko connected motor control, Zigbee® uses the standard EZ-mode for pairing: push the switch button 3 times within 6 seconds.

  • A long press on the program button will not trigger a pairing mode.

  • QR code scanning (install code) is not supported in Niko Home Control, but can be used by third-party systems

A connected motor control, Zigbee® in a third-party Zigbee® network will use the meshing capability: See Zigbee® network principle

The meshing capability of the connected motor control, Zigbee® will only be active within the Zigbee® network where it is configured (intra-network). Messages will thus not be routed across different Zigbee® networks.

Note that specific Niko Home Control functions will not be enabled when Niko Zigbee® devices are connected to a third-party Zigbee® controller/gateway.

Functions that are specific within the Niko Home Control eco installation and are therefore not available in third-party Zigbee® networks include:

  • The possibility to disconnect the control (and its wired extension switches) of the connected motor control, Zigbee® from the built-in contact and configure it to another switch

  • Over-The-Air (OTA) firmware updates

  • Configuration of the feedback LED: enabled, disabled, inverted

  • Predefined actions and routines from Niko Home Control
