Casambi®

Description

Casambi® is a wireless Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) mesh-based technology used in lighting and lighting control products.
The Casambi portfolio comprises six Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) mesh-based lighting control devices that can be mounted in a traditional luminaire to make it smart.
One of said devices is the Bluetooth® controllable DALI controller (CBU-DCS).

You can integrate one or more Casambi® wireless networks into the Niko Home Control ecosystem using a CBU-DCS combined with the Niko Home Control DALI-2 addressable module (550-00370) or the Niko Home Control DALI-2 broadcast module (550-00371).

What do you need?

Niko Home Control DALI-2 addressable (550-00370) or Niko Home Control DALI-2 broadcast module (550-00371)

Niko Home Control programming software

Casambi® DALI gateway (CBU-DCS)

Compatible devices:
iPhone 4S or later
iPad 3 or later
iPod Touch 5th gen or later
Android 4.4 KitKat or later devices produced after 2013 with full BT 4.0 support

Casambi® concept diagram and general guidelines

  • The wireless Casambi® DALI controller (CBU-DCS) acts as a gateway between the wireless mesh nodes in a Casambi network and a DALI network

  • The max. total number of Casambi-enabled luminaires and control devices is the same as for one DALI network (CBU-DCS not included)

  • The CBU-DCS has a passive bridge functionality, meaning it does not use a DALI address

  • Casambi® Evolution firmware is required to use the CBU-DCS

  • Set-up of Casambi® devices and the CBU-DCS is done with the Casambi® app (see the chapter on Configuration for more detail).

Use

The following five use cases illustr+ate the use of the Niko Home Control DALI-2 modules with Casambi®:

Use case 1: expand an existing DALI network with a wireless Casambi® network

An existing wired DALI network linked to Niko Home Control via the addressable Niko Home Control DALI-2 module, can be expanded with a wireless Casambi® network.

The max. total number of Casambi-enabled luminaires and control devices equals that of one DALI network (CBU-DCS not included): 64 devices per Niko Home Control DALI channel or 64 + 64 devices per Niko Home Control DALI-2 module.
Note that the Niko Bluetooth® dimmer switch (ref. 360-21001) is also compatible with the Casambi® network.

Use case 2: control a partial wireless Casambi® network via a Niko Home Control DALI-2 addressable module

A part of a more extensive wireless Casambi® network can be controlled via the addressable Niko Home Control DALI-2 module (550-00370) and the Casambi CBU-DCS.

The max. total number of Casambi-enabled luminaires and control devices equals that of one DALI network (CBU-DCS not included): 64 devices per Niko Home Control DALI channel or 64 + 64 devices per Niko Home Control DALI-2 module.
Note that the Niko Bluetooth® dimmer switch (ref. 360-21001) is also compatible with the Casambi® network.

Use case 3: control an extensive wireless Casambi® network via a Niko Home Control DALI-2 addressable module

A more extensive wireless Casambi® network (see the max. numbers specified below next to the line drawing) can be controlled by the addressable Niko Home Control DALI-2 module (550-00370) combined with multiple Casambi CBU-DCS controllers.
Each Niko Home Control DALI-2 module has two channels that can control up to 64 devices per channel (max. 128 devices per Niko Home Control DALI-2 module).
One Casambi® Evolution network can contain max. 250 devices.

The max. total number of Casambi-enabled luminaires and input devices equals that of one DALI network (CBU-DCS not included):
- 64 devices for one Niko Home Control DALI-2 channel
- 64 + 64 devices for two Niko Home Control DALI-2 channels (one module)
- 64 + 64 + 64 devices for three Niko Home Control DALI-2 channels (two modules)
- 64 + 64 + 64 + 58 devices with four Niko Home Control DALI-2 channels (two modules)

Use case 4: control an extensive wireless Casambi® network via the Niko Home Control DALI-2 broadcast module

A more extensive wireless Casambi® network (see the max. numbers specified below next to the line drawing) can be controlled by the DALI-2 broadcast module (550-00371) combined with the Casambi CBU-DCS.
Up to 249 Casambi® luminaires can be controlled with one CBU-DCS.

Up to 250 devices (249 luminaires and the CBU-DCS) can be controlled in a Casambi Evolution network

Use case 5: control several wireless Casambi® networks via a Niko Home Control DALI-2 addressable module (550-00370) and the Casambi CBU-DCS

The max. total number of Casambi-enabled luminaires and control devices equals that of one DALI network (CBU-DCS not included): 64 devices per Niko Home Control DALI channel or 64 + 64 devices per Niko Home Control DALI-2 module. Note that the Niko Bluetooth® dimmer switch (ref. 360-21001) is also compatible with the Casambi®network.

Wiring diagram

Casambi uses mesh network
technology. Each CBU-DCS will
therefore also act as a repeater.
Longer ranges can be achieved
using multiple Casambi units.

Compatible devices:
iPhone 4S or later
iPad 3 or later
iPod Touch 5th gen or later
Android 4.4 KitKat or later devices produced after 2013 with full BT 4.0 support

Configuration

  1. Create a Casambi® network using the Casambi® app and pair all devices, including the CBU-DCS

  2. Configure the Casambi® DALI gateway in the Casambi® app

    1. Define the Control scope for the commands sent from the Niko Home Control DALI-2 network
      1. Control Scope: defines which devices from the Casambi® network send information via the DALI gateway to the Niko Home Control DALI-2 network. Default setting = All luminaires

      2. The control scope can also be restricted to a single scene with only the luminaires controlled by the Niko Home Control DALI-2 installation.
A ‘scene’ means that the luminaires are grouped so that they can be assigned to a specific DALI gateway

      3. Enable Export sensors and Export switches to allow detectors and push buttons to be discovered by a DALI network. However, the Niko Home Control DALI-2 modules do not yet support parts 301, 303, 304 (of the international DALI standard IEC 62386). Export sensors and Export switches thus need to be disabled.

    2. Define the Control priorities for the commands sent from the Niko Home Control DALI-2 network

      1. Higher than manual: this setting prevents the Casambi® network from controlling Casambi® devices. Instead, they are controlled by the Niko Home Control DALI-2 module

      2. Manual (default): allows control by the Niko Home Control DALI-2 module and Casambi®

      3. Higher than automation: allows the Niko Home Control DALI-2 module software to control lights under automation, but not those manually controlled by Casambi®

      4. Lowest priority automation: The Niko Home Control DALI-2 module only controls lights at the lowest automation level. Any control from Casambi® will override dimming levels

  3. Configure the Niko Home Control DALI-2 installation via the Niko Home Control programming software (DALI scan and configuration)
